Nursing school program accreditation, meaning those providing accepted degrees, consists of a self-regulatory voluntary process where schools and/or programs that have demonstrated that they conform to or surpass certain standards and criteria for educational quality.
In the case of nursing school program accreditation, there are currently two national organizations that provide the accreditation: NLNAC (National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission) and CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education).
While not every nursing school and nursing program is CCNE or NLNAC accredited, and it’s certainly possible to obtain a quality nursing education without going to an accredited nursing school, a degree from an institution accredited by one of these organizations guarantees you to be qualified to attend another accredited school of nursing, should you be interested in an advanced degree, for example an RN-to-BSN or Master’s degree.

As the beginning of the traditional semester calender begins, there has been a push from nursing schools and programs to attract students interested in health care careers as a nurse.
With the shortage of nurses continuing unabated, these programs are competing for students. As a result, nursing students find themselves with more choices, more flexibility in choosing a curriculum, more financial aid available. Nursing schools in Ohio are becoming increasingly competitive as more and more applicants look to careers as a nurse. Programs such as BSN programs have become harder to get into as more and more people apply.
Ohio nursing schools have actually had to begin turning away many qualified applicants simply because there is not enough room. This has become not just a nation-wide problem, but a world-wide shortage.
Due to the severe shortage of nurses, more and more people have begun considering the field, and are looking to earn their LPN to BSN, RN to BSN, RN to MSN or MSN. With a nation wide nursing shortage, nursing schools are beginning to feel the pressure.
There is simply too much demand, and that demand is forecast to increase.
Nursing school programs have a limited number of slots available, and during the 1970’s and 1980’s many nursing programs closed.
In the early 80s the situation began to turn around. The population began shifting as baby boomers began to start considering their retirement. Nurses had left the nursing field in droves and the older nurses suddenly had no one coming in to take their places when they retired.
Nursing school administrators had been predicting the shortage, but it wasn’t really considered serious problems at that time. (more…)

Nursing school programs are facing a critical need to fill nursing jobs.
Demand will increase as the population is shifting and baby boomers are retiring. This will create a need for more nurses to help as more elderly patients enter hospitals and nursing homes.
While nursing jobs are already plentiful, they are going to increase dramatically over the next 10-20 years.
